Online Job Banks

  • National Diversity Journalism Job Bank. Sponsored by the Florida Times-Union, this site claims to be "the nation's most comprehensive list of journalism openings on the Internet." Available to anyone, it aims for participation by minorities and women, and specifically focuses on openings at newspapers.
  • Other Job Banks. Secondary page on the National Diversity site; includes media-specific sites, plus a few generic job hunting sites such as the Monster Board.
  • Media Professional. An informative monthly ezine from the Young Media Professionals Committee of the Audit Bureau of Circulations. They have compiled all the job resources from their archives into one document. Send a request for the "jobs compilation" to MediaProfl@accessabc.com. Contents include Job Hunt Guides, Resource Directories, General Job Banks and Media-Focused Resources. An excellent resource. You can subscribe to the monthly ezine at the same address.
  • Editor & Publisher Classified Page. Many specific categories of positions; the same ads are found in the print edition.
  • The Reporters Network from Houston Chronicle Interactive includes help wanted postings. Journalists looking for work post here as well. Check out these Boards: The Reporters Network Jobs Board, News Reporters Bulletin Board, and Freelance Writers Bulletin Board
  • JobLink from AJR/NewsLink. Search job listings from a detailed set of criteria including: Category (traditional media, online media, academic); Medium (newspapers, broadcasting, advertising, etc.); Experience Level; Specialty (reporter/writer, editor/manager, researcher, photojournalist, etc.); and Region (within US and "outside US").
  • The Job Bank of the National Conference of Editorial Writers (NCEW). Brings together editorial and op-ed page opportunities. Links to other job sites as well.
  • Journalism Jobs. Inclues an archive of J-JOBS, a weekly digest of journalism job postings on the Internet. The source for these job postings are journalism related newsgroups and discussion lists as well as postings sent by media organizations. Listings include both permanent and freelance opportunities.
  • The Louisiana Tech Journalism Web Server. Also maintains J-Jobs postings, as well as links to other online sources for journalism job searches.
  • The Write Jobs. Job Listings from Writers Write(tm) for staff writers, journalists, editors, technical writers, etc. Other writer-specific resources at this site include how to submit to publications via e-mail.
  • Copy Editor Job Board. Copy editing positions from the print newsletter Copy Editor.
  • Reuters Media World Employment Office. The site requires registration, but it's free. The "employment office" links to job resources at AdWeek, Ad Age, Media Central, Rep Temps, Inc. and Reuters. You may find a few journalists' positions sprinkled throughout these resources which primarily list marketing and advertising jobs.
  • Newspaper Jobs Page. From the Detroit Free Press; select "journalism job banks" to find resources categorized by listing services, professional associations, communications companies and university sources. Also see the Knight Ridder openings. Many other helpful links for journalists at this site.
  • Broadcast Employment Services. A must for broadcast professionals. Find jobs that are available right now, post your resume, and connect to the employment pages of TV stations across the country.


News Organizations

  • CareerPath.com. Search classifieds from major newspapers across the US. Helpful if you want to restrict your job search to a specific geographic area.
  • News on the Net from Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc. links to news sources by category; target your specialty and go directly to sites for possible job listings. Also includes a list of major national, international, regional and metropolitan news sources.

Subscribe to mailing lists in your field -- job postings appear frequently.

  • The Beat Page. Mailing lists for journalists compiled by Investigative Reporters and Editors, Inc.
  • Liszt. A mailing list directory, Liszt lets you search for even more mailing lists that relate to journalism, jobs, or specific categories or beats.


Just for Freelancers

  • Freelance Journal from Trond Husoe. Lists opportunities and position specifics, as well as links to professional associations, the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund, and mailing lists. Check out the articles from this journal -- many focus on finding paying markets.
  • FreelanceOnline. Includes art, Web design/maintenance and writing and editing related jobs. Full-time jobs are also listed. The service is provided by Dan A. Wilson, editor of The Editor's DeskTop.

Collect Royalties on What You've Written

  • Authors Registry. An "Automated Rights Payment System" that collects royalties from publishers, database producers and reprint services on behalf of authors whose work has been re-used electronically and via photocopy.


Journalism and Writers' Resources
If the online job banks don't help, try using the journalism mega sites. Look for news organizations or publications that you can contact directly. Many post employment opportunities on their web sites.


Interview Sources

  • GuestFinder is a web-based service designed to make it easy for journalists to find guests and interview sources. Highly recommended.
