RELEASE
Meta-Search Engine, Mamma.comTM, Gets New Look
Mamma.comTM Redesigns Entire Site: Lighter, Faster, More...
MONTREAL, CANADA - May 17, 2002 (INB) -- Mamma.com, The Mother
Of All Search EnginesTM (an Intasys Corporation company,
NASDAQ: INTA) is sporting a new look. The meta-search engine
has undergone a redesign to better position itself for future
strategies, such as premium meta-search, personalized content,
and database marketing.
The goal of the redesign was to modernize Mamma.com's look,
while keeping the homepage simple, uncluttered, and maintaining
its ease of use. The ability to view a search engine's homepage
- quickly and without requiring a change to browser settings -
was crucial, as was the ability to adapt the new look for upcoming
services. Localized versions of the search engine are currently
being developed, and will now be easily implemented due to the
redesigns' flexibility and universal appeal.
The new homepage is 35% faster, making load-time more manageable
- users with 56k modems will be able to load the page in only two
seconds. This lightening up of the page was a necessity as search
engine users become more discriminating, being more likely to go
elsewhere than to wait for a slow page. Avoiding superfluous
images, such as curved headers and icons, and focusing more on
pure html played a large part in the reduction.
In addition, features that might require downloaded software or
a change in browser settings were avoided. Therefore, no java,
flash, shockwave, etc., was used. The new site has achieved a
modern look without gimmicks.
Mamma.com's focus is to remain a search engine and to steer clear
of portal services. However now, as always, space for advertising
on the homepage has been maintained. The new look has brought
the Mamma FavoritesTM, industry exclusive text links, to the
center of the page. It is estimated that advertisers can expect a
10-15% increase in their click-through rates. Additionally, there
is room for a small banner.
Another aim of the redesign was to make MammaTM - the site and
the character - more personable. The homepage now has a space
devoted to Mamma.comTM communications. It will be used to
convey Mamma.comTM news, Internet facts, new services, business
relationships, and other information of interest to users. This
is the first step of a continuous relationship that Mamma.comTM
wishes to develop with its users. It is important for the search
engine to establish a rapport with its users prior to deploying
any database marketing strategies, which will include personalized
content.
The MammaTM character, created in 2000, has also undergone changes.
While characters have often been used for branding purposes offline,
there is limited use online - the new look brings Mamma.com's
character front and center, giving her a new dimension that will be
used to better brand the site.
